How did this grant contribute to the realization of your project in regard to artistic exchange, local cultural development and/or the promotion of cultural diversity?
I am working for several years on my photography project “Vanishing Worlds” with the aim to give a glimpse into the life of tribes living outside of the modern world as we know it. In most cases the reason for their disappearance are globalization or climate change. The RCF grant allowed me to travel to Iran, make connections with various local organizations as well as individuals who expressed their willingness to help me organize my photo exhibition in an unorthodox way. The location of the exhibition will be Mt. Damavand’s base camp at an altitude of 4200m. The support of my new Iranian friends didn’t stop there. They have helped me also identify several tribal groups living scattered around Iran. This set a milestone for a future collaboration.
How does exchange, networking and international contacts contribute to the development of your artistic and cultural project?
The essence of my project requires visiting of many countries around the world (Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Morocco, Mongolia…just to name few). I managed to cover so far about 25+ tribes. However, the RCF grant let me built my own network in Iran; set a major milestone for my further project develop while collaborating with local artists as well as give opportunity to expose my project to big audience. In addition, I felt like a cultural ambassador of Bulgaria to Iran. My new local friends were so curious to learn about my home country, the people, my culture, language. In the same time, when I returned to my home town I shared my experience from Iran. And I try to encourage more Bulgarians to go and visit Iran and make their own projects there with the help of local artists and organizations.
Can you elaborate on the learning and knowledge you have gained and shared throughout this experience?
My visit to Iran was a game changer. Opposite to the major opinion about Iran, I was very pleased to discover local people are warmhearted with open mind to the world. I learn to trust my instinct more and be bold. This trip inspired me to collaborate and prepare new projects in Iran.
