RCF - Tribune for artists in exile. 7 October 2016.25.10.2016 At the initiative of Roberto Cimetta Fund, a Tribune for artists in exile was organized on Friday 7th October 2016 at the Arab World Institute in Paris in collaboration with Onda - the French Office For Contemporary Performing Arts Circulation, the Syndeac and the Arab World Institute
This event was aiming to encourage more awareness about the current situation of Arab artists and cultural operators in exile particularly amongst their French and European counterparts, in order to favour understanding, exchange and engagement. More than 120 professionals from the sector of Arts and Culture took part in it.
The following artists and cultural operators, representing the artistic and cultural world in Arab countries, have contributed to the debate: Fadi Yazigi, Syrian visual artist and sculptor, Hanan Kassab Hassan, Syrian professor and cultural operator, Sana Yazigi, Syrian designer, Hala Omran and May Skaf, both Syrian actresses.
Jack Lang, President of the Arab World Institute opened the debate, which were moderated by Ferdinand Richard, Chair of the Roberto Cimetta Fund.
We want to thank all our partners and all the participants who took part with enthusiasm to this initiative through their presence, solidarity and generosity.

RCF - Call for TAMTEEN Grants. Deadline: 30.09.2016.16.09.2016 In the context of international mobility and exchange of artists and cultural operators, the Roberto Cimetta Fund is running a funding line to support strengthening and sustainability of organisations and their activities. This funding line entitled "Tamteen" aims to strengthen cultural and artistic organisations and/or artists collectives operating in the Arab World and developing local projects (venues, networks, platforms).
We hope through this fund to create a leverage effect that could contribute modestly to rebalancing forces between Arab and European components in the exchange, as well as strengthening and sustaining cultural exchange between Arab regions. The grants provided will not exceed 3000€ and can be considered as co-funding depending on the projects selected.
This call is open for organisations, artists collectives and independents cultural managers based in the Arab world and have been operating at least for a year.
The demand presented must explain how it will develop in the long term and contribute to local cultural development. Sustainability implies any action that will allow the organisation or its action to last. by covering operational costs. For example this could be by providing a salary to an administrator, buying equipment, renovating a space or any other operational cost. Support to artistic production can be provided only if this production can prove “sustaining” effects. Thus, this fund does not finance production costs directly related to artistic works.
The experts and Board members of the Roberto Cimetta Fund will monitor the selected projects during their implementation.
The evaluation and selection processes will take place during the months of October and November 2016.
The results will be announced on 1st December 2016.
Five projects at least will be selected. The funds provided must be used within two years, unless agreed otherwise.
The Roberto Cimetta Fund and the French Ministry of Culture and Communication hope that this fund can serve to strengthen projects that emerge following the benefits of a travel grant and at the same time support the financial autonomy of local independent cultural initiatives.

RSS- Consultation Intentional destruction of cultural heritage20.05.2016 As announced in her first report to the human right's council in March, the special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Ms. Karima Bennoune, intends to devote her next thematic report to the Intentional destruction of cultural heritage and would like to invite of relevant actors to send contributions to inform her report.
What is the impact of the intentional destruction of cultural heritage on the enjoyment of human rights, and particularly, on cultural rights? What is the impact of destruction of tangible cultural heritage on intangible cultural heritage, on cultural practices and beliefs, and on the right of concerned persons to participate in cultural life?
What are examples of different situations illustrating the above (situations of armed / non armed conflict or international / internal conflict; destructions by States / Non-States actors; geographical or other diversity, etc.)?
What are examples of good practices, especially with regard to prevention and protection against destruction, as well as repatriation and reconstruction measures of cultural heritage, including through human and cultural rights education and awareness?
What strategies are in place to protect cultural heritage defenders at risk? Under which circumstances can they be considered as cultural rights defenders?

Deadline: 15th May 2016.14.04.2016 Culture Resource has announced a new call for funding applications for projects that seek to monitor and develop cultural policies at the local or regional levels in the Arab world.
The call is open to organisations, individuals and groups from 12 Arab countries until 15 May 2016.Grants of up to $8,000 are awarded for each project selected. An independent jury made up of cultural policy experts from the Arab region is responsible for selecting the projects.
Applications will be accepted from the following countries: Jordan, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco, Sudan, Yemen, Tunisia, Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt and Mauritania. The call is open to the following individuals or entities from the Arab region: - Cultural, artistic and research organisations and groups. - Individual practitioners in the arts. - Cultural managers.Legal professionals.

RSS - The India Theatre Programme 2-31 July 2016, Pondicherry, India. Deadline extended 30th April 201631.03.2016 The Drama School, Mumbai invites applications from theatre makers, actors, dancers and performance artists for this intensive 4 week training and creation workshop in Pondicherry, India. This immersive residency is for 24 individual practitioners from across the world, seeking to inform and enhance their own personal practice through understanding universal principles of performance as found in three Indian traditional performing art forms. The training will be conducted by nationally recognized masters of these forms, and guided throughout by the award winning ex-director of The National School of Drama, India’s foremost training institution for the dramatic arts. Indian dramatic practice dates back to the 1st century BCE, if not earlier, and its fundamental principles have informed performance practices from across the world (such as Grotowski, Stanislavsky, Zarrilli and Schechner to name a just a few). The first three weeks of the programme will be dedicated to training in the various forms and understanding the principles that can be taken into contemporary practice, the final week will be a guided creation exercises designed to assimilate and apply these learnings. |

RCF - Open Call – Europe Grand Central residencies Deadline for applications: 15/03/201623.01.2016 In the framework of the EU funded project “Europe Grand Central”, The Roberto Cimetta Fund is launching an open call on 1st February 2016 to invite Arab artists to submit proposals to six thematic European art residencies on the concept of “borders”.
The six residencies will be run by six independent art spaces that all encourage interaction between artists and local inhabitants. They are based in Fengersfors (Sweden), Bologna (Italy), Athens (Greece) and Lublin (Poland), Gozo and Malta . A minimum of 10 residents will be selected. Profiles include artists from all artistic disciplines, curators, cultural/social animators, theatre practitioners.

Europe Grand Central is a 2-year (September 2015 to August 2017) cooperation project funded by the European Union under the Creative Europe programme. It groups together independent cultural spaces in European countries from the Trans Europe Halles network on the theme of « borders ».
The aim of the project is to transform perceptions of border crossings from suspicion into curiosity, empower under- and misrepresented individuals and groups through storytelling, and exchange methods of inclusion between cultural practitioners and organizations. A unique digital and conceptual platform also connects audience-created-narratives about the human act of crossing borders.
Applications can be made in English or French. The call will be open for one month and a half (February til mid-March 2016).
Results of the call will be announced on 1st May 2016 and the residencies will begin at earliest 1st June 2016. Each of the ten grants awarded amounts to 1200€ and covers accommodation (400€), per diems (300€), international return travel and visa costs (500€).

Description: LAMINARIE theatre group has been founded in 1994 and it has its headquarters in Bologna, Italy. Since 2009 Laminarie directs theatre DOM La cupola del Pilastro, in convention with Bologna Local Administration. The group’s mission aims at discovering new ways to communicate within avant-garde theatre. The group has a mature audience production line and a young audience production line. For well over ten years the company has developed its own character, which borders with architecture and visual arts, cinema, literatures. Theatre DOM, opened in 2009 in an old dome in the heart of Pilastro neighbourhood in Bologna, established itself on the national scene as a leading venue for the particular know-how developed in the field of “territorial activation”. Its methodology was developed in a continuous balance between a strong artistic identity and a relationship-oriented work, especially focused on Pilastro, the suburban and poor area of the city where the theatre is placed. For this reason, Laminarie was awarded the special UBU prize in 2012 for its activities “on the boundaries between production and residencies, between city and countryside, migration and memory, childhood and adulthood, between theatrical research and work with the neighborhood, Pilastro in Bologna”. The UBU prizes were created in 1977 by Italian critic Franco Quadri. They award the best theater events of the year, voted by a jury composed of 54 top art critics of the country.LAMINARIE offers an EGC artistic residence at Theatre DOM la cupola del Pilastro, via Panzini 1, Bologna, Italia. The residency will aim to develop Laminarie's project ECUBA-ports and suburbs along the Mediterranean Sea, that is included in Europe Grand Central Project. Ecuba links together theatre research for the production of a new play with the desire to approach new audiences to the languages of performing art. The project runs from 2015 to 2017 and involves Italian suburbs and small villages where there’s a lack of stable theatre structures, and several ports along the Mediterranean Sea. We decided to focus on Ecuba’s character for different reasons. The Greek tragedy is universal and it can be used as a means of dialogue between different cultures along the Mediterranea Sea. Its characters are strong enough to involve people of different ages and backgrounds. Ecuba is the story of a war told by the perspective of losers. It’s a symbol of a possible change of point of view in history narration.
Criteria: We are looking for professional single artist or groups who work with theatre and performing arts: actors, performers, playwrights, directors. Artists should be interested in the project Ecuba and have a strong willness to work with the context where we are, listening to the features and the needs of the territory and finding connections with the place where they come from. At the end of the residency the results will be shown to the public through public meeting, performances or any other suitable form. Language English/French

Description: Our local residency programme is called Community Arts Lab. Lublin, although not a big city, has an incredible amount of resources, institutions, groups, and cultural agents working on culture. Although Poland's economy is considered one of the most stable and growing in the EU, the country is experiencing similar processes which happened in the West and later, post-1989, in East Central Europe. Culture is playing an increasingly important role in shaping creative subjectivities and opening potentials of populations. Culture is also seen as an effective tool to solve a variety of social problems, create environments of tolerance, citizen empowerment, increase participation in urban affairs, build stronger communities, open new means of dialogue, creative expression and alike.In the frame of the Community Arts Lab programme we are experimenting how culture and arts can cross divides between locals, strangers, neighbours, artists and local communities living the city of Lublin. Artists and cultural animators who are curious about crossing borders and interested in building relations with local communities using public space as site of participation and cooperation, are invited to the residency. CAL programme is not focusing on artistic intervention in public space but rather on carrying out activities involving communities living in Lublin in order to create lively public spaces. We want to question the role of artists/cultural animators/managers in contemporary society and our rapidly changing world. We will provide a local cultural animator who will help in communication with local communities and in production of interventions, accommodation, materials. The invited artists-in-residence should be ready to: • carry out activities focused on a process in one of the districts of the city of Lublin involving the local community and using the local infrastructure (people, spaces). • work with one of the target groups: children (3 – 13 years old), seniors (plus 60 years), difficult youth, unemployed, homeless, young parents, addicted to alcohol. • cooperate with tutors, scholars, artists and animators from Lublin.Artists and cultural animators interested in applying must propose a draft of an action that involve the target groups listed above in the application form.
Description: Not Quite is an artist co-op of material based and visual artists in a small village in west Sweden. In an old Paper mill we share workshops for metal, wood and ceramics and keep a shop, a café and gallery paces for visitors, mostly during summertime. Most of the artists work in the field of contemporary crafts, we run artistic projects together and have produced exhibitions, performances and music festivals during the last 12 years.
Criteria: Our project is built around participation of the inhabitants of Åmål and the knowledge the members of the artist co-op. We have seen that workshops that for example involve sewing, handicraft and food making are activities that have created meeting points of people from different groups, these have then become the foundation for developing new ideas. We would like to have guests that have experience of working with collaborative and participational projects, were the local context is of great importance, mapping and processing the local history and present situation. We would like to work together with the guest towards a public event of some kind in Åmål.
Residency n°5 and n°6: Malta and Gozo, Valletta 2018 Foundation provisional dates of the residency: from June 2016 (duration: 2 to 4 weeks). Number of residents:2 Description: The Valletta 2018 Foundation is offering two artist residencies with workspace for production and exhibition although these spaces will vary depending on the nature of the artist’s work. The purpose of the residency is the promotion of dialogue between artists and the community, with specific interest in community engagement in view of the 2018 European Capital of Culture title. Each residency will take place on one of the two main islands – one in the more urban environment of Malta and one in the more rural Gozo. In both residencies, access to the community will be facilitated through the Valletta 2018 Foundation, but the artist will be expected to conduct their own research prior to the residency.
Criteria: The residencies should be built around dialogue between artists and communities. The residencies are open to artists from any discipline. Participants are required to engage with the community, not only through public programming activities such as workshops, open studios, exhibition or performance but especially through direct involvement with communities and / or community-based organisations.
General criteria of RCF i. The impact of the residency experience abroad must have constructive repercussions on the localised context in the Arab region when the artist returns. This means that his or her experience must not only contribute to personal development but must be shared in a “networking” fashion that will benefit connecting artists and operators in the applicant’s own country or community when he or she returns in order to maintain, renew and develop contemporary arts practise in the Arab regions. ii. Applicants must choose the cheapest form of transport. Visa costs can be covered.
Schedule The call will be open for one month and a half: 1st February to 15th March 2016 Results of the call will be announced on 15th May 2016 The residencies will begin at earliest 1st June 2016

If the information you provide is considered eligible for this call, you will receive the link to a brief form that you must fill out and submit before the deadline. Funds will be released to successful applicants in the following way: accommodation and per diem grant will be provided to the artist on his or her arrival at the residency. Travel grant will be released upon submission of proof of travel, proof of accommodation and per diem expenses. A written report must also be provided before travel costs are reimbursed.

RCF - Tribune for artists in exile - 7/10/201613.09.2016 The Roberto Cimetta Fund, the French Office For Contemporary Performing Arts Circulation, the Syndeac and the Arab World Institute invite you to a Tribune for artists in exile on Friday 7th October 2016, from 18h00 to 19h30 at the Arab World Institute in Paris.
This event will encourage more awareness about the current situation of Arab artists and cultural operators in exile particularly amongst their French and European counterparts, in order to favour understanding, exchange and engagement.

SPEAKERS Fadi Yazigi’s art is a testimony to the power and conviction of a whole generation of artists living and still working in Syria. Fadi constantly experiments with new materials and techniques and his work ranges from painting to sculpture to reliefs. His sculptures depict people as under-developed creatures or half-human beasts emerging from a half-monster, half-human world that is constantly fluctuating between the two. His work has been shown in individual and collective exhibitions in the Arab world, in Europe, in the USA and in China. In April 2016, his individual exhibition entitled “Sourced From Mother Earth” was presented at the Art Paris Art Fair. Hanan Kassab Hassan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Roberto Cimetta Fund. Renowned theatre expert, Professor at IESAV-University Saint Joseph, Lebanon, formerly professor at the University of Damascus, Hanan was Dean of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts of Damascus, General Secretary of Damascus Arab Capital of Culture 2008 and the General Director of the Opera of Damascus, Syria. Sana Yazigi is the founder of the creativememory.org website which aims to archive all the intellectual and artistic expressions produced since the beginning of the Syrian revolution in 2011 until today. This website is a rare and precious example of how to preserve contemporary artistic expression and intangible cultural heritage from the danger of being wiped out and forgotten. Hala Omran trained as an actress at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts of Damascus. During her career she has worked with Syrian and French-Arab directors such as Ossama Mohammed in his film Sacrifices (official selection Cannes 2002) or Yousry Nasrallah in his film The Gate of Sun (official selection Cannes 2004). Hala is a poet and also promotes the diversity of Syrian and Arabic culture through songs and translations of major works by Syrian poets or young playwrights in exile. May Skaf is a Syrian actress and television star in her country. Founder of “Teatro”, workshops for young Syrian artists in Damascus, May is a fervent defender of independence for the arts in her country. She stayed in Syria at the beginning of the revolution and was an opponent to the regime before deciding to leave for Jordan and has only recently arrived in France. At the beginning of the revolution she and many artists and intellectuals wrote a declaration to ask that the siege of Deraa cease (in 2011). May was taken prisoner then released and was imprisoned many times after that. The media, particularly in the West, have often relayed her outspoken words.

The project Making neighborhoods was born in 2013 thanks to the collaboration with the South African organization Africa Centre. At the time Jiwar hosted the South-African anthropologist and photographer Sydelle Willow Smith with a project called Making neighborhoods, that turned into the name for Jiwar’s project. With “Making neighborhood” Jiwar suggests a critical and creative reflection on the complex situation of living together in the city.

Deadline: 22.07.2016.01.07.2016 Culture Resource launches Round 5 of its //Abbara Program//, which aims to support independent cultural initiatives/ organizations from the Arab region with a development package of support that includes institutional funding, administrative training, capacity-building workshops and networking opportunities.
Abbara is one of the few funding programs in the Arab region focused on organizational development. Previous rounds were limited to applicants from five Arab countries (i.e. Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Tunisia), but, this year and in response to growing demands and changing local environments, Culture Resource has expanded the program to include to all Arab countries.

RCF - Selected artists / Europe Grand Central16.06.2016 Europe Grand Central is a ground-breaking cooperation endeavour aiming to build on the human act of crossing borders in order to produce inclusive statements on diversity and ultimately pave the way for global movements of connected human values.
Within the framework of this EU funded project, 10 partner organisations and collaborators*, all solid cultural operators and networks, have joined forces to develop grassroot projects and encourage trans border mobility.A series of methods to meet audiences wherever they may be are currently being elaborated by partners working on a variety of issues such as rising xenophobia towards refugees in Sweden, individual consequences of mounting economic crisis in Greece, disconnected suburbs and city-dwellers in Bologna and Bremen, political tension towards the eastern borderlands in Poland and so on. The main tool to highlight is a unique digital and conceptual virtual interface called Bordrs, connecting audience-created narratives of border-crossings.
The Roberto Cimetta Fund, as a partner in this project launched an open call to invite Arab artists to submit proposal to four thematic European art residencies on the concept of BORDERS and related to the local communities.
Following an evaluation of applications run by RCF’s Committee of experts, and in agreement with the EGC partners and RCF Board of Directors, we are pleased to announce the names of the artists who will be attending residencies in Greece, Italy, Malta, Poland and Sweden from June 2016 to January 2017. The selected artists are:

Deadline: 20th June 2016.11.05.2016 Tandem is now inviting cultural organisations from Arab countries and from Europe to apply for the new round of the Tandem Shaml programme. Tandem Shaml supports experimental cross-border collaborations between cultural change makers from Arab countries and Europe. This exchange and knowledge development programme allows cultural professionals from many different disciplines to acquire skills required for engaging in long-term partnerships.
The Tandem process provides hands-on possibilities for getting real insights into European and Arab cultural scenes. Participants will gain practical experiences in collaborating with rapidly changing fields in both regions.

FRC - News // Uphold Grants29.04.2016 The project "Studio 8" received an uphold grant from the Roberto Cimetta Fund. They have been able to rent a space in Amman and have been actively working to renovate it. Here are some photos! Studio 8, located in Jabal Amman, in a dynamic neighborhood downtown Amman, opened its doors on March 17Th 2016. Today, it offers dance trainings and programming performing arts workshops (theatre, music and signing) for youth and neighborhood community contributing to the development of the artistic scene in Amman.

FRC - News // Uphold Grants28.04.2016 “Danseurs citoyens” who had received an uphold grant from Roberto Cimetta Fund has opened its new space: Lang’Art space - Tunisian-African Street arts training centre on the 11th of April 2016.
Thanks to the efforts of its initiator Bahri Ben Yahmed and his team, this old cistern was transformed into a street arts training centre. This centre will implement trainings in dance, music and theatre for amateurs youth and professionals based on an artistic vision promoting equality, freedom of expression and citizenship rights and awareness. More specifically, it will focus this year on the issue of coexistence and racism and presents many artistic works in the streets and publics spaces.
The Roberto Cimetta Fund wishes them a successful start!

Jamm'Art is a 72-hour massive online conversation that encourages voices and thoughts to be mixed and exchanged starting from these questions: • Are artists and intellectuals obliged to engage in society and politics today? The Valletta 2018 Foundation is launching an international call for the engagement of a curator or a curatorial team for a high-profile multi-site exhibition and cultural project within Valletta and around Malta and Gozo. The working title of this multi-site exhibition and cultural project shall be ‘The Sea – Our Neighbour”.
The project shall be one of the keystones of the Valletta 2018 Cultural Programme and will be the opening exhibition of Valletta’s European Capital of Culture year. It shall be inaugurated in January 2018 and run for a period of three to four months.
The Valletta 2018 Foundation is seeking proposals from curators or curatorial teams with an international track record to curate this project. Expressions of interest can be submitted in the form of a concept proposal.

RCF - Results of Upline 201529.01.2016 The Roberto Cimetta Fund (RCF) is pleased to announce the results of the 2015 call for applications for the Upline.
This funding line aims to promote cultural and artistic initiatives lead by Arab artists and cultural operators developing local projects (venues, networks, platforms).
The call received 350 online requests in two months (15th August – 15th October 2015) and 102 written applications (31 in Arabic, 28 in French, 43 in English). These applications were sent from 14 countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Yemen) which is an increase compared to the first call. 50 applications out of 102 were considered eligible (24 in English, 9 in Arabic, 17 in French). The evaluation of the applications was made by the Expert Committee of RCF and took place from October to November 2015. The final selection was approved by the Steering Committee and the Board of Directors of RCF in December 2015.
The selected projects are:
1) Chrysalide, an Algerian association, grouping together passionate professionals and artists in theatre, literature and arts. Chrysalide invents the time and place of meetings between creators and the city of Algiers. Their watchwords are simple: to share freedom and fun in cultural discovery, arouse curiosity by the radiation of artistic culture, encourage the intermingling of legacies and modes of expression. The Roberto Cimetta Fund provides support to the renovation of an abandoned cellar in the city centre of Algiers.
3) Nassim el Raqs, is an on-site choreographic and interdisciplinary art creation festival. It is a laboratory for artistic creation offering on-site art residencies in Alexandria, honouring dance, body expression and movement. The festival is at a turning point in its development. After 5 years of bold initiatives it needs to strengthen and shape its activity in Alexandria in a sustainable way, by providing the appropriate workspace and working tools for the team.
4) Studio 8, is the only youth-run performing arts studio in Jordan. The Studio 8 artists conduct public workshops, classes, and performances in order to use the arts to bring people from diverse backgrounds together. The support given by the RCF will enable Studio 8 to finalise renovation of a new creative space and return to its creative programming.
The five projects will run throughout 2016 and 2017.
The countries where the actions of the 50 eligible projects are taking place are as follows: Algeria (2), Egypt (14), Iraq (2), Jordan (1), Lebanon (6), Morocco (8), Palestine (5), Syria (2), Tunisia (9), Turkey (1). 6 projects are from rural areas only, 27 in urban areas, 7 in suburbs, 3 in refugee camps and 7 in a mix of rural and urbain areas. The average age of project leaders is 31 years old. 20 project leaders are women and 30 are men. The artistic disciplines involved are : architecture (1), dance (7), film (6), multidisciplinary work involving also art in the public space, sociology, ecology (14), music (5), theatre (7), visual/digital arts (5), writing/literature/language/calligraphy (5). 38 of the 50 projects are very good.
The Roberto Cimetta Fund and the French Ministry of Culture and Communication support in this way the financial autonomy of local independent cultural and arts initiatives. |

RSS - Call Performing Arts - Deadline: 15.02.201625.01.2016 Applications for international collaborations in the performing arts with partners from North Africa and Eastern Europe can be submitted until 15 February 2016!
We are looking for binational partnerships that initiate, develop and implement new artistic projects. In a time frame of up to two years the artists should obtain the opportunity to devote time and energy to meeting and engaging in an intensive exchange of ideas.
This could mean strengthening existing contacts or creating new ones. The call for proposals is aimed at regional and state theaters as well as independent companies from the German-speaking world (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), who wish to develop an artistic project together with a partner from North Africa or Eastern Europe. RSS - International Award Culture and Sustainable Development - Deadline : 15.03.201621.01.2016 The Agenda 21 of Culture is launching, with the support of United cities and local governments (UCLG) and the City of Mexico, the second edition of the «International Award UCLG – MEXICO CITY – Culture 21 » on culture and sustainable development.
This award is unique ; it is the only international prize that explicitly links culture and sustainable development in cities. To access the rules and application or nomination forms for the prize, click here.
The call will close on 15th March 2016. The award amounts to 50 000 euros for the winning local government which is a generous sum.
The Agenda 21 for culture will promote all the very good projects on their website as examples of good practice for culture in sustainable cities. |
